A lot has happened since Friday when I last posted...or should I say not a lot has happened. Chris was enjoying eating food again when "production" from his ileostomy slowed noticeably. As you'll recall, he was making great progress following the surgery, which led to his progression with the liquids and food and then when production should have increased even more it dramatically declined and almost has stopped.
He has been having cramping in his abdomen which was not completely abnormal given that his GI system has to start working again after so long without food. Dr. Graham cut him back to liquids and then back to ice chips yesterday as tests have resumed to determine what is going on. He's a little stumped because everything is cleared out internally following the most recent surgery yet food doesn't seem to be passing through as expected. Chris had an inconclusive CT scan yesterday (contrast didn't make it to the end) and another this morning (to see if there was residual contrast and then compare to yesterday's results). The waiting game continues to see what Graham feels the next steps should be.
On a positive note, Chris has had two negative tests for the bacteria that caused the contact restrictions. So even though the gowns and gloves remain outside his room, we decided (with Graham's confirmation) that we're done using them with each visit, so I brought Cailyn up to visit her daddy on Father's Day! She greeted him with a huge hug and made Chris' day. While he would much rather be at home at least Cailyn can resume her daily visits to the hospital. I'll post a couple of pictures from their time together shortly.
